Thanksgiving football in eastern Connecticut traces its roots all the way back to the 1800s, making it one of America's oldest sporting traditions. This cherished holiday ritual has brought communities together for generations, creating an atmosphere of friendly competition and civic pride that has stood the test of time. The Eastern Connecticut Conference is home to two of America's longest-standing Thanksgiving traditions—Norwich Free Academy vs. New London and Stonington vs. Westerly. These storied rivalries have been played consecutively for generations, binding communities together through fierce but friendly competition. As a proud member of the Eastern Connecticut Conference, Windham High School continues this storied tradition, carrying forward the legacy that has defined Connecticut's communities for over a century.
1930s - 1980s
For decades, Manchester High was Windham's quintessential, permanent Thanksgiving arch-rival. Even when both schools experienced losing records, this game completely "made or broke" the season for the community and senior players. The rivalry ended when massive population growth in Manchester pushed their school into a much larger enrollment division, making the disparity in roster sizes too steep.
Late 1980s - 1990s
As Windham settled into its regional footprint, Killingly stepped in as the primary holiday foe. This matchup featured an immense amount of physical, old-school Eastern Connecticut football. It frequently carried massive postseason weight, with the winner often spoiling the other's state playoff ambitions. Scheduling changes and shifting conference landscapes forced a split, though the two teams still maintain a highly competitive regular-season relationship.
2000s
Separated by just a few miles on Route 195, the E.O. Smith Panthers became the ultimate "geographic" rival. This matchup was a hit with local fans because players from Willimantic and Storrs grew up playing against one another in youth leagues. Windham eventually left the Central Connecticut Conference (CCC) to join the Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC), forcing the two programs apart. The two teams most recently met in the 2022 regular season opener, with Windham winning in dominating fashion 56-14.
2009 - 2010
Following the departure from the E.O. Smith matchup, Windham briefly found themselves without a holiday partner due to mismatched conference schedules. Wilcox Tech (Meriden) stepped in to fill the vacancy as a structural placeholder while the ECC figured out a long-term solution. Windham won both holiday matchups against Wilcox Tech in 2009 and 2010.
2015 - 2025
This became Windham's modern holiday staple known as the Whipville Turkey Football Classic. To stand out from Thursday morning games, the schools traditionally clashed on the Tuesday night before Thanksgiving. Windham dominated the series with a 9-game winning streak until Montville broke through with a 49-0 victory in their final series game on November 25, 2025.
Starting in November 2026, Windham will officially begin a new Thanksgiving holiday rivalry against the Woodstock Academy Centaurs. This change comes as part of a broader ECC divisional scheduling shakeup. With Killingly moving away from Thanksgiving games to focus on a Saturday Week 11 format, the ECC paired Windham and Woodstock Academy to ignite a brand-new regional holiday tradition.
